Successful Cyberbootcamp

July 21, 2020

Cyberbootcamp 2020 is done, we can look back on a successful first edition with a fantastic group of cyber security talents! The Cyberbootcamp could not have come at a more favorable time. After a long period of distance learning and social abstinence, 21 talents were able to intensively develop hard and soft skills for a week.

There were workshops web (by Fontys teacher Ron Mélotte and ECSC 2019 alumnus Diederik Bakker), crypto (by Sophie Keizer and Pieter Rogaar of the NCSC), ethics (also by Ron), a case day (by Deloitte's Cas van Cooten and Danilo Verhaert, with Dirk Jan van den Heuvel from Secura in the role of CISO), reverse engineering (by The Hague University of Applied Sciences teacher Daniel Meinsma), binary exploitation (via livestream from Italy by UTwente teacher Andrea Continella), hardware hacking (by the one and only @jilles_com ) and attack / defense and Faust CTF with the legendary Team Spotless.

There was also a cyber scavenger hunt, a pub quiz, swimming in the lake, cooking and washing dishes, hacking in the free hours and barbecuing with our friends from Challenge the Cyber. Everything organized with love and guts by ECSC 2019 alumni Jasper Boot and Olaf Haalstra.

After the Cyberbootcamp, the Dutch team was selected on the basis of complementary skills, social fit and growth potential. This team consists of:
• Junior: David Bouman (5 Gymnasium), Maarten Meijer (UT), Simcha van Collem (RU), Wouter Doeland (RU) and Zawadi Done (HU)
• Senior: Diederik Bakker (UT), Hugo Peters (UU), Noah Goldsmid (UT), Robert van Eijk (HAN) and Vincent Dunning (UT)
Various training activities will be organized with this team, but also with the other Cyberbootcamp participants. Because despite the cancellation of this year's European Cyber Security Challenge, there are plenty of other events to look forward to.

We are very proud of the first group of Cyberbootcamp participants: they are not only technically skilled, but have all shown their willingness to learn and have opened up to us, to the teachers and to each other. Together we have laid the foundation for a close-knit community of cyber security talent: together we make the Netherlands a lot safer!
